No, it just gives you more ability to resist as the 80 yo man did successfully. No way he would have been able to w/o a firearm. This old guy carrying a gun on the street makes it more likely that someone will shoot him or he will shoot somebody else. We don't have to rely on fantasy. We know how it turned out. He successfully defended himself and we know he wouldn't have been able to if he'd been unarmed like you prefer.
