>I think a great project might be something like "solar farms" in some of the southwestern deserts where the government already owns huge swaths of land. Not in the picturesque desert, but some of the flat, featureless expanse that makes up the most of it. The government could GIVE the land to anyone who wanted to commit develop a solar plant, leave the technology up to them, but guarantee a connection to the grid.

I would agree. We also have the smart grid idea on the table.

But with climate change going on, how about a smart water grid? First off, our water infrastructure is more than a century old and needs to be replaced all over the country. But what if we could build a system that could:

1. Desalinate and purify sea water
2. Drain areas that get flooded
3. Reroute excess water from flooded areas to drought-stricken areas

Yeah, it might cost trillions, but it'd create tons of jobs, make sure people everywhere have clean drinking water, preserve our ability to farm our own food, and protect hundreds of billions in property.

It'd never happen because our wingnuts would scream bloody communism, but talk about a game changer.

Liberal environmentalists will never allow a major solar development in the southwest.
