In our case for my wife, I had to pay over $6000 to an attorney, wait for a year for approval of the paperwork, then wait another 18 months before a review at the US Consulate in Mexico, then wait another 4 months for the documents. And this was for my wife...almost 3 years for permanent residency - for a legal immigrant.

This is the "easy path to citizenship"

There is a very easy path to citizenship for some, through engagement to a US citizen via a fiancé visa. Paperwork usually takes 6 months or less to get your prospective foreign spouse here, where a marriage is required within 60 days. Then he or she (most often she, most often a younger mail order hottie from Russia or the Philippines or from several other countries) can get an immediate SS # and permit to work. 3 years later, he or she can gain full naturalized citizenship.
