I think this patent structure needs to be revised to provide incentives to drug companies to achieve desirable [from a public policy perspective] objectives. Ultimately, patents need to be tied to profitability, and some reasonable standards for measuring profitability of individual drugs need to be developed.

I am amused at the availability of drugs for lengthening eyelashes, for example. I guess that's a big problem for someone, but hardly seems as though it should as much a priority as treatments for certain cancers, for example.

But there is no way I think Congress should tackle a problem like this at this time. They're too big a mess and just need to go home.
