I'd thought about private prisons too... amazing gumption to run a for-profit prison and lobby for longer sentences, immigration laws, etc. I don't know how many states have privatized, but my friend in Arizona just mentioned to me that Texan prisons are privatized. I know the immigration reform in Arizona is due to lobbying from the prison industry. Geez, what an oxymoron.... 'prison industry.' I through Diamond in there for historical treatments, to dispel for many the idea that we're exempt from calamity by choice. Early in Collapse, he mentions that it seems inconceivable that the US could collapse. He wrote that before the meltdown; I wonder what he thinks now...
