I was motivated by neither. I was motivated by the desire to work outdoors in a field that I loved, and believed in its stated objectives and mission. Which was: "Manage forests for the greatest good for the greatest number of people for the longest time" possible. I chose government service even though at the time it paid much less than similar work for private industry. What I got in exchange was job security, and I'm not one damn bit apologetic about that. A lot of what I poured my life and dedication into has fallen by the way side, including substantial investments in tree improvement. I'm am very sad--no, angry--about that. Many in government want to gain power. For those motivated by a sense of public service there are different ends.
