Russian Scientists: Global Cooling on Horizon

It's been an exceptionally cold April throughout much of the country. It's also brought record levels of snow to some areas from Minnesota to Colorado.

Russians scientists say the Earth may be headed for a period of global cooling and it could last 200 to 250 years.

The Voice of Russia reports that belief comes from scientists at an observatory in Saint Petersburg.

They say the sun is heading into a less-active cycle that will affect different aspects of the climate on Earth and over time could lead to cooler average temperatures.

Joe Bastardi, chief forecaster at WeatherBell, says the change to cooling is already here.

"We are definitely going to continue the global cooling trend that began four years ago," he said.

***Bastardi shared more of his thoughts on the matter on Newswatch, April 29.

But what happened to global warming? In recent years, it just hasn't been happening, certainly not like it had been predicted. Some scientists say they have guesses as to why.

Some speculate that the oceans are absorbing extra heat or other natural factors. Others say the climate is just more complicated than some scientists thought.

Still others believe man-made global warming just isn't the threat some warned that it was.

What if global cooling really is the next trend in the climate? Bastardi says "that's far worse than global warming" because among other things, it's harder for plants and crops to grow when it's colder.

"The implications of colder weather are much worse. Think about it -- more people live closer to the equator than to the poles," he said.

If Bastardi and other experts are right, bundle up because more cold winters just may be coming in the years ahead.

The rise in temperature slowed down around the year 2000. Some experts say their trust in climate science has gone down because of all the uncertainties.

The irony of course is that the plantation system without modern farm machinery would not been nearly as successful had there not been slave labor. Given the growing distaste for slavery that was occurring throughout the world around that time, that made it a flawed economic model. And yet, here is this 21st century woman suggesting that everything was peachy keen in a prosperous, dynamic South that very much looked like Gone with the Wind pre civil war and then came the big, bad North ruining everything. I understand that conservatism likes to look back and typically likes what it sees when it does so but that view is ridiculous.
