RMF,
Hey, I consider the NYT's one of the most legitimate news sources in the world, but I've seen times when they tend to favor stories that portray a particular point of view even if it can't be totally verified. THIS story would be "especially" difficult to verify.
I think of it this way. Most people think the NK regime is completely nuts. Many have theorized that the regime is desperate, but they can't point to any specific reasons why. All they can think of is that the new leader, Lil' Kim, is trying to consolidate power, but why would he need to if he's the "Chosen One"?

This story, which was published by the NYTimes, provides a sensible explanation for why the NK regime is doing what they are doing these days. At least it does to me. The prevalence of the underground market in NK tells me that the NK regime has much less control over its citizens' lives than we once thought. All they can do now is just silence any opposition, but that's hardly enough for power mongers who thrive on brinkmanship, showmanship, and totalitarianism.
