The government sent us to the moon. I'd say it did that pretty well. Was that "preserving the status quo?"
Those days are long gone. The race to get to the moon was driven primarily by Cold War politics. Once we got there, the age of the astronaut started declining.

The point is that when you argue for government spending for the sake of "job creation," it doesn't matter at all what is being produced. That's how you end up with tanks that the army doesn't need. That's how you end up with bridges to nowhere, airports to nowhere, pork barrel projects that only enhance the vanity and the power base of the incumbents.

If you actually cared about what was being produced, you would turn into a libertarian in just one month.
