This frenzy of buy recommendations, in the face of AOL's fundamentals and prospects, seems to me downright irresponsible.

I agree 100%, but then brokerage analysts have never been accused of being value investors. They and their brokerages are sales mechanisms and, like all sales organizations, they find it MUCH easier to sell product when "demand" exists. If demand doesn't exist, it can be conveniently and unilaterally manufactured.

Is Wall Street a great business or what?!

In the short run, the market and logic make very strange bedfellows. Further out, fundamentals DO matter. Sooner or later, either AOL makes sense as a business or it doesn't.
