It's biased because they chose a start date of 2009.

Just as choosing a start date for the S&P 500 of the March 2009 low to measure the gain from then to the end of 2011 or to now would be not a true measure of returns or gains or losses. Roughly, it would be unbiased if it was measured over a complete cycle, from high through low to high, or from October 2007 to now. AlterNet left out the period 2007 to 2009.
