Memory chips inside smartphones and personal computers might be invisible to consumers, but that hidden role belies their importance in devices. They are so crucial that chip manufacturers have spent years locked in brutal price competition that has left weaker players scattered by the wayside.

Now, the handful of remaining major manufacturers are cutting back on capacity expansion – a move that could have troubling implications for some customers in a smartphone industry that has enjoyed an increasingly abundant supply of memory chips at decreasing cost.
