Most states are like that. There are good and bad places to live most everywhere. Except I would rule out frigid
northern snow-plagued climates.
For example here in the Raleigh metro area, we have one of the highest per capitas of PhD's in the country, a very cosmopolitan place full of native southerners, northerners, Asians and transplants from the West coast (who
love our less expensive housing).
The schools here are also good. But go 30 miles in any direction and you have the rural south. Granted, it's not as bad as the deep south, but it goes downhill fast.
I've been through areas of California and Wisconsin that are just as bad. Education sure makes a difference, no matter where you are.
Now then, that said, we have a Tea Bag legislature, thanks to redistricting and even the urban areas of NC
are likely to go downhill in the coming years unless there's a big voter whiplash. It is not pretty to watch.
The ALEC template is being applied here just as it is in many other states. I am glad my kids made it through the schools here while they were still of good quality.
