Thomas,

Although there must be dozens of people who read this thread who can answer this question better than I can, the fact is that Intel is a major developer of software, including firmware. From my reading about the company, I seem to recall Intel has something like 500 full time software developers.

I think Intel's software business is small as a % of their overall operations, and much of it is modules that get licensed to other companies, but it's surprising how much Intel software there is floating around, and there will be more in Windows 98. I have read that Intel developed much of the "fast start" technology that will make Windows 98 APPEAR to be DRAMATICALLY faster than Windows 95 (what actually happens apparently will be that while applications do actually load faster due to organization of programs on the hard drive, they will appear to load MUCH faster because you will also get the user screen before all of the loading and initialization processes are complete). Also, a lot of the PNP and Video for Windows stuff that is imbeded in the ROM Bios and Win 95/98 is actually Intel software.
