Z, I'm not sure your link contains valid data. It claims that in 1966, anyone scoring 500+500 on the SAT would have been in the 72 to 83 percentile, which is well above the median.

But according to the Wiki link I posted, the mean scores in 1972, which is just six years later, have stayed around 1000.

It's hard to reconcile those two data points without coming up with some plausible but unlikely theories.
