Increased CAFE standards have led to much smaller, lighter cars that don't survive collisions nearly as well as those in the past.
Oh yeah, the "good old days" when safety meant having the bigger car in a wreck.

I don't know where you get the impression that cars are "smaller and lighter" these days, especially given the popularity of SUVs.

But overall, highway deaths per year have fallen from 25 per 100,000 Americans in 1966 to about 10 in 2011:
