So charity, forgiveness, acceptance & sharing became a set of natural philosophies to cope with all that threat. And for this Christianity does its greatest growing & finds its greatest appeal , out of desperate times when all people's security in the empire was threatened, once wealthy folks are thrown in with the common man in similar fate, The new religion of Christianity contained very real fundamental coping mechanisms in its philosophy as we see any animal subjected to fear ,stress hopelessness & uncertainty will certainly turn in desperation. There was the dawning then of a realization that no special "divine" labels applied to any individual, that all men were equals capable of a charity that involved simple communion & sharing. What we call Christianity is born out of those realities & conditions , it does get an "A" for the inclusion of women in the services to a greater extent than that culture had ever seen before . As for charity, communion , all men being equally created beings needing to get their own acts together , this was already preached & practiced long before Jesus comes on the scene. As was the act of martyrdom also a way to change the game & influence the popular mind, Jesus was not the first martyr to ever live. I assume you are familiar with Felicity & Perpetua, these two women were great game changers with their martyrdom but Romans already cherished & protected their women , so that scene was too much for some to bear. The idea of martyrdom as a mode of change of popular mind was not new nor Jesus the first martyr to ever live, nor the idea of charity & philosophy of the equality of men either, that story starts long long before. .
