Sam, haven't studied your whole post yet, but here's a comment
on the spin-off. You said...
>>One speculation that would probably really turn things topsy turvey if done: what if IBM spun off their drive division to their shareholders? I haven't seen any speculation that this might actually happen, but we would certain be talking about a "Big Four" instead of a Big Three if it occurs.<<

I don't think it will happen. About 6 or so years ago (before
L.Gerstner became CEO) there was some talk about it. IBM renamed
the division ADStar, new signs went up on Cottle Road in San Jose.
Then, shortly after, the signs came down, the name AdStar disappeared.
We employees never got an explanation.
Also, in the CEO discussion that came with the last earnings report,
Lew G. singled out the DD business as having made more progress
than others.

But it is OK to consider these things and their possible merits.

<<Goldman Sachs was
being showing both realism and integrity in saying that they think it is an $80 stock in
the face of the sell off. That sounds outlandish with the stock languishing at or below
$25, but it isn't. >>
It was also surprising to hear Bear Stearns state a $60 target (has anyone been able to confirm this). I can't recall anytime I have seen a target price by a reputable brkerage on a substantial compny Of 200 percent or more of current price.
