Some more issues--

1) Modem signaling needs lots of MIPs.
2) Modem also needs telco approvals in different countries (unlike
10M or 100M ethernet)
3) Different countries add more requirements on top of ITU standard.

Re -- Most important point with technology is not performance but cost/performance ratio..

Exactly, why software modems are ideal for the sub-1000 PC segment (which BTW is a large segment for the modem market)

Re -- Speed of the PC's..

When the PentiumII 300 Mhz.. becomes the mainstream/low end by mid-end 98, it will have enough horse power for software modems.

Re -- They still require some D/A hardware interface components (could be on the motherboard) which does cost some $$

Right, the cost of the hardware codec, is very small. And given Intel's plans of integrating it in the chipset, its cost could be 0.

Re -- The concept has been around for years.

Right, but today there are products out.. and by the end of next year it will become standard, on low cost PC's.
