<<I see that WDC has released info that they too have internal MR capacity. Like most of the mfgs, WDC appears to keep multiple sources of components qualified (good move, IMO), and appears to be moving towards an integrated model (a bad move IMO).>>

No, no, no, no, no. They are talking about making MR disk drives, not MR heads. In the COMDEX CC on 17nov97 WDC was asked about their RDRT partners. They mentioned IBM, RDRT and APM, blah blah. They were then asked if they had any plans to get into the heads biz. Haggerty spoke very clearly and said "We have NO plans to enter the heads biz" Very clear. Very to the point.

Any of you APM bulls listen to that CC? Did you hear what they said about each of the 3 head partners? Sankar?

I sure wish that the current DD sector wasn't in the state it is in. Those RDRT announcements certainly didn't make me happy! But it almost sounds as if you are taking the "no news is good news" stance. This *might* not be the right approach.. Why? Check this out:
dljdirect.com

Not much there. And then this:
dljdirect.com

Ypou certainly have highlighted the fact that APM does not issue press releases. That doesn't mean they don't have any news... How many people missed the APM earnings shortfall last Q? It sure was a shock. "Why didn't they issue a warning!?!" I heard. Because they don't do that...

Hi Mark,

From APMs web site:

<Applied Magnetics' two wafer fabrication facilities in Goleta, California are based on 150 mm (approximately six-inch) diameter round
substrates. Each six-inch wafer produces approximately 8,400
individual nanosliders (unyielded). Picoslider wafers will produce
more than 15,000 individual sliders (unyielded) per wafer.>

Note that the 6 inch MR is an APM product that is part of the WDC ramp up while the 3 inch 2.1 MR product that is being dropped belongs to RDRT.

Regards,

Don
