The common American citizen does not want to get involved in education. They lack the desire to know enough to fix the problem. Those who have the desire to get involved are mostly part of the problem.

As a former school board member I have a much better idea of how the system actually works. If most people knew that their teachers are simply greedy people who want to fleece taxpayers while working less hours they would be upset.
Maybe the likes of Ben Chavis, Michelle Rhee, Salman Khan, et al, are
finally beginning to make a dent. More parents need to be aware and
pissed!

The system needs more people like them. I have viewed some videos from Khan Academy. He is helping students willing to put in the minimal effort necessary to watch pertinent videos.

Some teachers actually care. Many of these are the best teachers who make up for the majority who are not motivated to teach well. Some teachers who really care are bad anyway and need to find alternate employment.
