There is something to be said for having a literate society with a certain amount of well roundedness. But when most of the students don't bother reading the literature they are supposed to be learning from it is clear that the effort is wasted.

Yes we need a more technically literate society. As you wrote, technical writing is much more important to our future than poetry and creative writing. A literate and productive society will have time for literature on their own time.

If most Americans worked, produced and earned a good living they would have time to visit the poetry reading at the coffee house.
