This is NOT a call to improve anything. If one took it seriously, it would preclude any ability to decide to improve anything:

In the Mind there is no absolute, or free, will, but the Mind is determined
to will this or that by a cause which is also determined by another, and this
again by another, and so to infinity.

You may have a reading comprehension as well as a logical thinking problem.

Brum is just all mixed up. He is not a thinker. He believes that determinism means that nothing matters and that decisions and actions do not make a difference. Of course, his beliefs are ludicrous. Life teems with myriad choices and continuous value judgements--from what we eat and wear, to whom we love. None of us had anything to do with getting here. The balls just lined up and there we were! But as someone wisely said: to have meaning we need only do something meaningful--something that matters.

However, it seems to me that we have free will within the larger context of the determined universe. I say that, because we can reliably "cause" future events that are randomly chosen. For instance if you write down a thousand street corners on a thousand cards and let me draw a card, I can reasonably be expected to be capable of making certain events roughly occur in the future. I can go to that exact corner and perform a precise set of instructions determined by the random drawing of myriad other cards. So even if this is occurring within a larger context of determined events...I am ok with that. Within my sphere of influence and action I have complete freedom of will--limited only by reality. And I am ok with having real limits...unlike superstitious Fundies who will not accept what is but must give wishing and dreaming top billing.
