"how on Earth can you diagnose a gender identity problem on a child at that age,"

The child will tell you s/he is not the sex s/he appears to be. Even lay people with IQs over 80 should know enuf to say, "Kid, you have a problem." Professionals have additional criteria....

Diagnosis of GID The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM IV TR) describes Gender Identity Disorder as a strong and persistent cross-gender identification with at least four of the following:

  • repeated stated desire to be of the opposite sex
  • in boys a preference for cross-dressing or simulating female attire and, in girls, wearing stereotypical masculine clothing with a rejection of feminine clothing such as skirts
  • strong and persistent preferences for cross-sex role in play
  • strong preference for playmates of the opposite sex
  • intense desire to participate in games and pastimes of the opposite sex.

In adolescents and adults, the disturbance is manifested by symptoms such as a stated desire to be the other sex, frequent passing as the other sex, desire to live or be treated as the other sex, or the conviction that he or she has the typical feelings and reactions of the other sex
