Jim, AMD and Cyrix have to price their chips a certain % below Intel's. Even if AMD/CYRX sell out, they are a losing a bunch off the top. I don't know how much business MMX is taking away from PIIs. Regardless, remember that PII/PPRO is growing in the server/workstation market and is taking more and more mkt. share away from UNIX. That will offset losses from sub-$1000. we have to wait and see.

Re - "If AMD and Cyrix can sell all they can make then Intels price cuts are a moot point are they not? They are capacity contrained...especially AMD..."

Not a moot point at all. If AMD makes no profit, it is much harder to compete in the future when it is time to:

- design a new chip,
- build a new fab,
- buy new equipment for 300mm, .25, Cu, etc.
- hire the best people, Stock options arent' worth much with zero profit.
- try to compete in other areas Intel is heading.

Why is AMD in business if they can't make a profit for their owners...so Jerry can ride around in a nice car?

PII for cost of P/MMX

I caught the glimpse of an article in one of my on line news service that said Intel was working on a PII for the sub $1K market, but that it wouldn't be available for several quarters.

My Opinion: They are going to start dumping MMX's into this market and take lower margins in the meantime.
