Ox you are quite right here. I started to watch VXX some time back and indeed watchers of the real time trading thread will note I made almost 1k in two days finally playing it (only to watch it skyrocket a few days later lol). nonetheless we now see it at yet another all-time low. It certainly does NOT track the VIX and as we have learned the problem of contango makes this a net loser in this environment. I think a certain group of us (you, jacob, rts, esp. ...and some others perhaps) like to 'experiment' with the market a bit. watch, trade, learn its oddities and certain characteristics that can be turned into money makers. testing theories (my vxx trade was almost a naa naa to the market- can I skim a grand of this beast of a loser to most everyone else in recent years), prodding, understanding the human nature of the herd, etc. I can’t watch all day due to, ahem, a different job, but I can see enough over the days and years to understand the likely (though never guaranteed!) direction of stock prices after unforeseen news for instance. Or buy out rumors. Or gap ups and downs. Not an exact science to be sure but perhaps enough to tilt the odds in one's favor. So that is long answer for I agree far better to play something like the super liquid QQQ's long or short ETFs say, than these VIX ETNs with all their built in bugaboos.
