"There are people near me who've been here for over twenty years and don't speak English." Where do you live? On a farm in Iowa....??? People will go to their own "kind" when they arrive in a strange or new place......if there are enough they will form a small community and stay that way for the rest of their lives. Only their children who will go to school become fluent in English.....the immigrants will be able to handle some English but not with confidence.. Some will never learn the language, they don't need it. How many natural Americans speak a foreign language? How many Europeans speak more than one language??? The "Fathers" of this country did exactly the same thing.....they didn't go out and live among the natives....
