The CEO of AP thinks it is not only illegal, but unconstitutional.

There is a specific procedure that is set out for incidents like this, and the CFR is very specific that BEFORE such a subpoena is obtained, that negotiations be entered into with the target to come up with limitations. DOJ did NOT follow those requirements.

Once again, you apparently don't understand the need for an absolutely free press. This is why we [Americans] tolerate such bullshit out of the media.

It is sheer idiocy to tolerate this kind of crap out of an administration. Can you imagine if GWB had gone after NYT like this? You'd be raising holy hell, you hypocrite.
