There was some cool little Italian restaurant right beside it and the cook was from my home town. GO TO THE ORBIT ROOMorbitroom.ca Best Rooftop Patios in Toronto Photo credit: Alex Pietrowski By: Kelli Korducki Posted: May 17, 2013 As wisdom passed down from the ancients will tell us, the only thing better than drinking beer in the sun is drinking beer in the sun with a view. Here’s a round-up of some of Toronto’s finest rooftop patios, which offer the chance to do just that. The Madison Ave. Pub Okay, so it’s kind of fratboy terrain. And those washrooms—oh, those washrooms (seriously, just hold it in. You’re better off.). The food is fiercely, unapologetically so-so and the taps list is woefully predictable. No matter: these drawbacks are instantly forgiven once you set foot on the Maddy’s gloriously roomy, sun-soaked patio. Overlooking the pristine heart of the Annex, this is one rooftop where you can bring all of your friends together. Pauper’s Pub Another Annex mainstay (and sister pub to the Madison), Pauper’s is the place to go for reliable pub grub and one of the best rooftop patios the city has to offer. An eclectic blend of University of Toronto students, Annex locals and passersby keeps the crowd dynamic. The Works Gourmet Burger Bistro The Ottawa-based burger chain offers a limited selection of beers, wines, and bottled Smirnoff items, but its killer rooftop across the street from the Flatiron building, in the oh-so-pretty St. Lawrence Market area, makes it worth exploring. Besides, who doesn’t love a burger with their brew? Gusto 101 Wine on tap, at just $1 an ounce? Such dreams are made reality by this relatively new clubland destination, which, apart from its low-cost house-made wine, also boasts a beyond-impressive wine list. Best of all, Gusto’s glass-enclosed rooftop patio (which, by the way, has an actual retractable roof) takes reservations. Reservations! Murphy’s Law Yes, it is indeed possible to have a drink in the Beaches. While also home to a popular street-level patio, it’s the rooftop patio at Murphy’s Law—with a shimmery view of Lake Ontario and the pretty neighbourhood that surrounds it—that makes this place a destination. Oasis at Wayne Gretzky’s “Oasis” is kind of a lofty name, but it the gigantic rooftop lounge at Wayne Gretzky’s tries its best to make it so. With plenty of seating (capacity is 220) and a bustling, central view, Oasis is a downtown go-to when the mercury rises. Roof Bar at the Thompson Hotel You either have to be a guest or Thompson resident to enjoy the splendour of the hotel’s much-beloved rooftop deck, but nothing is impossible without a little schmoozing and/or begging. It’s worth the effort.toronto.com
