Easier to predict long term market moves than short term moves! If Saddam does not blow up the world, equities should provide a decent average return of around 10%/year nominal. However on any given year you may get +30% or -%20 as the market is risky! the standard deviation of the return for in a single year is 20%!!! Not for a buy and hold 25 year period the risk in reduced five fold! risk is inversily proportional to the square root of the holding period.
