Craig,

I recently assembled a 266MHz PII system and discovered that the Supermicro P6SLS MB with LX chipset offers AGP, a 2940UW SCSI controller and a Yamaha sound chip for a total MB cost of $299 (Q1).

FIC or someone else can offer the same features on the motherboard. But typically, people who go out of their way to save $100 don't buy SCSI hardware. And if your really want to have the best system, I am not sure Yamaha sound chip is the best option available.

When PII/233/512K chips hit $283 in January it will be VERY hard to justify spending more money on an FIC 2012 and an M2 to get similar features.

At that time, M2 233 will sell for $150, preserving the cost advantage.

I wonder though what will happen with M2 after MXi is introduced. Is M2+ going to be the Cayenne core at 68 mm^2? It would bring the cost down significantly.
