OK, to be more precise, a calm or black area on the sun is not terribly unusual during entire solar cycles, and they seldom presage anything except occasionally a mild solar storm.
It doesn't appear that this one will produce any decent flares - we had a few about 2 weeks ago anyhow. I still think that the NOAA predicted peak is early, they did blow it on predicting the late 2012 peak after all.

Good to know that you're still tracking with the controlling and upcoming cold wet Wheeler weather cycle.
