There have been plenty of quiescent patches previously.
Apparently so.. But this recent one seems to be inordinately large, and long-lasting.. But they are somewhat dangerous, from my understanding, as the open magnetic field lines they represent can permit a lot of high speed particles to to escape as the solar wind.. Too much and it can overwhelm the earth's magnetic field.

SO focuses a bit more on Coronal Holes about midway in today's update (he does this everyday and I'm learning quite a bit)..

I found this interesting.. There is some logical sense in the prospect that shifting and fluctuating magnetic fields would have tectonic effects and earthquake activity.
