thread, don't worry about cpq shipping to fill a channel this qtr and having slow qtr 1q98.
They have a model for each channel.
if a store is over their model inventory then cpq will make an adjustment for that. They may even take an try to justify a reserve
against sales in the 4q97.
Count on them making sure they have reserved off for the actual cost of inventory too.
This keep every thing in the 4q and show qtr to qtr gains from 3q to 4q.
but, doesn't over do 4q97 to where 1q98 shows a decrease.
4qtr for cpq can be and should be the strongest qtr.

thread, have you ever wondered why this thread doesn't constantly bad mouth dell and try to make cpq succeed by lowering dell.
It's strange, but some dellites talk more about cpq than they do dell.
the way to get ahead is not to knock the other guy down.
Just compare your practices to theoretical perfect and execute.
I've gone to speed reading dell thread now bec. it's too much about
cpq. and not enough about dell<ggg>

sheila, Let's look at CPQ over a longer period of time.
All split adjusted.
12/31/96 12/5/97
CPQ 29.75 64.75 117.64%
DELL 26.57 93.75 252.24%
IBM 75.75 112.25 48.18%
HWP 50.25 67.75 34.82%

Since Oct 27th there has been a recent price divergence between DELL and CPQ, however since the first of the year the two have tracked upward in unison. IMHO this divergence is only a short term condition.
I would expect CPQ to make a run to the 76-79 level while DELL consolidates around its current level.
Beware, I own CPQ but not DELL.
Additionally, I believe the analysts just can't quite figure the effects of the sub 1K business ie. margin, and are not quite willing to upgrade until results are announced or leaked. Whenever they see low prices, their first thoughts are low earnings. They will shortly find out that that is not necessarly true.
Hang in there for the loooog run,

Good investing,
Duncan

Sheila:

Sell your CPQ and buy Dell/IDM/HWP if you are disappointed - and don't call yourself an investor. What returns-period did you expect? 24 hrs.???

Don't blame CPQ for something that is entirely irrational (i.e. the stockmarket). Sorry to put this so bluntly to you, but you are the one that bought CPQ hoping that it would make you lots of $$$ - and now you are in the doldrums because the stock is nto delivering as you 'promised' yourself it would. You made the choice cosciously (I hope!) based on what was your pool of information, right?

To put it clearly: there is no rational explanation (except StockMan's CPQ is junk) to the performance of CPQ stock, or any stock, for that matter. Do you know the 'random-walk' theory? It's more successful than any investor's/analyst's prediction - at any time!

In short - don't blame someone else for your own decision! There is no single reason and no single cause for CPQ's 'sluggish' performance. At present, the choice you made has not come through - it might sometime later, though!

Very best regards

Kai

Sheila - By the time I just saw your post, I think the 'rationale' has already been beaten to death for you by the other posters! I'm also a bit surprised that CPQ has not tracked with the other majors, but as others have said, who can predict the market. I'm hoping the action does not portend future bad news, but for now I would just sit back and hold. I posted Mason's statement that sales continue to be strong yesterday, and I agree with Steve that I don't think he would be mouthing off if things were going downhill. Hopefully things will heat up along with XMAS sales over the next couple of weeks.

John

PS - I don't remember if you said you were a short term trader or longer term investor, for the long term all this is noise. Think about the fact that CPQ sells loads of servers and stuff to corps. In the next few years, 64 bit power will arrive via MERCED from Intel, and I have a feeling that will power quite a nice upgrade cycle...
