How do you get a change from 23 to nearly 30 in one week 7.7%?

WDC is making money???? They will breakeven BEFORE the 85-90 Million charge this quarter. BTW next year ASND will probably be more profitable than WDC. WDC will probably lose substantial market share to QNTM and SEG as they transition to MR. If they let any Quality Control problems slip through and get out on the market, they will lose even more market share and their brand name will suffer. Since they offer excellent warranties they will have to make good on the damaged drives as well (another charge against earnings).

I own both now, but am thinking of trading some WDC for ASND if the takeover rumours are false.

Not that there is anything wrong with WDC. I like their products, and so does almost every techie I know.

Pierre-X; WDC is only making money if you are shorting the stock. Ascend is making money considering I bought it at under $23 a share. You seem to be mixing up the question of WHO is making the money.

I don't know whether this has already been on the thread (Thursday's newswire) but here it is:

The following are selected from the top MarketScope MarketMovers as of 4:00 p.m.:

WESTERN DIGITAL CORP (NYSE:WDC - news) Down 1 1/4 to 17 7/8... SoundView cuts $0.25 2Q EPS estimate to breakeven, $2.42 FY 98
to $0.38... On 12/2 co. forecast breakeven 2Q (excl. charges) due to continued pricing pressures, lower unit volumes.

I cut out the other companies in this article. What do you make of the lower unit volume (I assume of units sold). This seems to be a change in prior announcements (earlier this qtr) that they expected higher volume but lower margins/EPS due to increased competition. I wonder if the lower volumes are due to their closing some of their lines down (ie TFI).

Re: Future unit volumes

To All:

FWIW, found the below clip in the Infobeat News e-mail of 12/05. Still looks like a huge market for DD out there. Someone has to deliver the se DDs. But I would accept that I may take too simplistic a view here.
