I'm not exactly clear on the point you're trying to make, Natedog.

Synthetic graphite was developed because of two issues: the only source of vein/lump graphite in the world, Sri Lanka, could not meet demand; and, Sri Lankan graphite has quite variable grade. So, synthetic graphite was developed for applications not amenable to flake graphite, and technological advances have permitted them to make a high-purity product reliably. But the latter comes at a great cost.
