>>"U.S. OPTIONS FOCUS/Investors jump on Ascend ride

December 5, 1997 05:30 PM

CHICAGO, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Options investors jumped on the Ascend Communications Inc ASND takeover bandwagon Friday, snapping up calls on speculation that the computer networking gear maker would be bought out, traders said.

But they said all the action was on the retail side, indicating institutional investors were staying away.

"There's all kinds of retail speculation out there," said one options trader in New York. "There's an absolute flood of retail orders. Nothing institutional." <<

Gary,

I would like to see this takeover happen as much as anyone but this is the 3rd time in 6 months the rumor has surfaced. The difference this time is the presenter was CNBC's pretty Maria. Is there any reason to think this time is different? I do agree that there is a certain amount of upward momentum with the stock now due to latest earnings predictions and the stock should not sink below 25ish and should slowly work its' way upward.

Your thoughts,

LJM

Hello Gary, I can only give you public info on the rumor as I am not at liberty to share everything with you. The following was printed in
San Jose Mercury newspaper 12/6/97.
Ascend shares jumped Friday amid speculation that it received a takeover offer and following its forecast that 4th qtr earnings will meet estimates. Ascend was up $2.06 to $28.94 in trading of 30.1 MM shares - the most active issue on US markets. It has risen 22 % since Wed. CNBC cited unidentified sources in reporting that the Alameda computer networking co. turned down a $35-a-share bid from Lucent, holding out for $40 a share.

Ascend repriced employees' stock option for the 2nd time at $24 11/16 a share.

I wouldn't advise on shorting or selling naked puts right now. Short covering and squeeze, good earning, and rumor will propell ASND upward. I have maintained all along that ASND will unlikely remain
an independent entity even before the rumore broke out.
