can you put the text below the icons on the top? My old eyes can't easily see it and it is very hard to see where there are new mail msgs, etc

Perhaps you might go into Tools \ Settings, and set Graphical Navigation Menu to No, turning off the icons altogether. With the blue background header, the contrast should be highly visible.
