Personally, I wouldn't make any decision based on how many recommendations a post receives or who made the recommendation.

As I asked before...what's the point?

I couldn’t agree more. It also has the added benefit of discouraging various little groups who are following each other around and recommend each others’ posts regardless how self-serving, useless or misleading these posts might be.
It'll also help identify (at least in an alleged manner) which posters have multiple personalities :-)
