Thanks John, that was an outstanding post. I'll make it a point to read Jeff's posts more often. I know you've been interested in the convergence of T.V. and Computers. Thought you would enjoy this article... Intel yields on digital TV standards SANTA CLARA, California (December 6, 1997 12:41 p.m. EST nando.net ) - Intel Corp. has agreed to adapt computers to a new generation of digital television broadcasts, apparently ending a war over technical standards. The chipmaking giant, whose decision was announced Thursday, essentially threw in the towel in the battle to force broadcasters to adopt standards by the computer industry for digital broadcasts beginning next year. Analysts say the move should speed the development of a new breed of television-computer devices. The Federal Communications Commission has ordered broadcasters to convert to digital, with the first transmissions expected in November 1998. In April, Intel was joined by Microsoft and Compaq Computer Corp. in a campaign to persuade the television industry to adopt a computer-friendly standard. Ron Whittier, a senior Intel vice president, said that the April proposal was "a smashing failure." Intel said it is now developing software with Hitachi that will allow computers to display digital TV broadcasts. It demonstrated a prototype of a modem-sized box, priced under 250 dollars, that would receive digital TV signals and transmit them to a computer. But Intel officials said the approach would work only on computers with the most powerful central processors, such as Intel's Pentium II chips. ______________________________________________________________________ John, I could be wrong here but I think Intel is focusing on this convergence the wrong way. Instead of trying to turn the computer into a television, they should buy or produce the chip which turns the Television into a computer monitor. Then OEM's would still have the microprossesor for funtionality. I don't know about you but I have very little desire to watch television while surfing the Net. I would and do however, like the ability to surf the net with my huge television monitor. If I had Intel's bucks, I would buy (FCSE) Focus Enhancement and lock up and expand this market too. Michael
