These results are noteworthy because Toshiba has been the longtime leader in notebook sales in U.S. retail channels, leveraging their strength in retail channels (PC Superstores, Consumer Electronics Stores and Office Products Superstores) to be the largest notebook brand in the United States. "Our StoreBoard data showed Compaq's rise in retail notebook sales starting in late 1996," said CI Senior Industry Analyst Dave Tremblay. "Compaq's success got the company to within about 10 points of Toshiba's share of retail notebooks in January 1997. However, as the year wore on, Toshiba managed to recapture share, and had reopened a 30-point lead over Compaq as recently as July. But with very strong sales of three new Presario notebook models in August and September, Compaq has managed to reverse the field, and now owns the No. 1 position in retail notebooks. This is clearly a battle of the heavyweights." ÿ Selected Notebook Market Shares In the U.S. Retail Channel Vendor Sep-96 Jul-97 Aug-97 Sep-97 Compaq 5.4% 14.0% 30.4% 42.4% Toshiba 57.9% 45.1% 35.5% 24.3% All Others 36.8% 40.9% 34.1% 33.3% Source: Computer Intelligence, 1997 ÿ CI's StoreBoard data showed that Compaq was the No. 1 brand of notebook in September in the combined retail and dealer channels tracked by Computer Intelligence, as detailed in the following table. Traditionally, dealer channel volumes are much greater than retail volumes, so the leader among dealers tends to lead the whole market. However, CI's research reveals that September was different, with dealer units slowing dramatically and retail channel sales rising to nearly equal the dealer channel's volume. "Compaq's surge in retail was in the right channel at the right time," Tremblay said. ÿ Selected Notebook Market Shares In the Combined U.S. Dealer and Retail Channel Vendor Sep-96 Dec-96 Jul-97 Aug-97 Sep-97 Compaq 17.3% 23.9% 20.8% 22.1% 28.8% Toshiba 41.5% 35.5% 34.4% 31.8% 25.3% IBM 19.8% 20.9% 22.4% 14.1% 18.2% All Others 21.4% 19.6% 22.3% 32.0% 27.7% Source: Computer Intelligence, 1997 ÿ "If Compaq wants to maintain this top position, it must strengthen its situation with the dealer channel,"Shipping ZiVA might help them too, CUBE are you working on them? said Matt Sargent, Industry Analyst at Computer Intelligence. "The retail channel was able to propel Compaq to notebook market-share leadership in September, but we expect the dealer channel to come back as the dominant supplier of notebooks in the fourth quarter. Compaq's current No. 3 position in the dealer channel could prevent the company holding onto the No. 1 position overall."
