Martin,

Two of the problems I have figuring out which DWDM company to invest in is getting an accurate read on their technology and what the potential market may be. In my recent foray in this area, I have not been able to define the market any better, but the technology is getting clearer.

One concept that I would like to have very clear in my mind is the transparency issue on DWDM devices. Transparency is defined as the ability of the device to mux whatever communication protocol that is sent in (e.g. ATM, fibre channel, FDDI, ethernet)and send the same protocol out over the single fiber. Some devices apparently need to map the incoming protocol onto a common protocol (e.g. SONET) before it is sent out on the single fiber. Do you know if all of these devices are transparent, or only devices from certain manufacturers?

I think this property (if it exists today), will be a critical feature of DWDM devices.

Thanks,

George D.
