Hi TJ,

It is very tricky and requires a lot of mental, emotional, spiritual and Physical (Health)l balance... for those who take overseas assignments.... Life is kind of set up where everyone encounters difficulties and is tested by the Lord.. Or the Karma Gods.... Lord Vishnu depending on one's world view.

We are all put through trials and tests by the Lord.... but it's also said that the Lord never gives us more than we can Handle.

None of us are perfect and the reason that so many people still read books and watch movies is the universal sense of Loneliness which I believe we all experience at points in our lives.. Authors who write honestly about their foibles and follies include some of the greatest names in Literature. Those gifted individuals find their voice there style and tell their story... and with so many of them they empathize with others and are keen listeners and observers of themselves and others and can then convey what they see; either autobiographically or in novel for.... and some blend the 2 together like a fine stew.

Also its been said many many times that we have an Angel on one shoulder and a Devil on the other....and that angels inner monologue is about doing the right thing helping others, not being greedy.

Then we have the little red Devil on the other shoulder..... telling us to look out for Number 1.... get the best of someone in a business deal or even if a mistake is made making change when buying groceries and it's to your advantage take the windfall and not worry about it....... so possibly we all have at least split personalities and so authors are in tune with what ,in my case the "Good John" would say, do and how he would respond. But the "Bad John" runs ideas through his mind that are diametrically opposed to what good John is thinking.... The Hot Chicks at the Dancing Clubs... The rush of spending money or going through Dr. Hunter S Thompson's field trip supplies -g- ... after a while that can get old and lead to over indulgences and the proverbial... crash and burn.... and ending in a trail of tears.....

As to your Intelligence comment.... I have read a few times in some1960's era literature that it's been said that when you get to a certain place.... you realize that life is an one great big ongoing Intelligence test.... and that really fits into the Darwinian concept of the strong simply rolling over the weak.

Your friend in Macau sounds like he is a goal oriented type A ..... Alpha type who knows what he wants and is pursing his passion.... more power too him.... I was working as a quasi-Chef at Birra Poretti's in Houston when I was in High School during the summer... My best friend at the time James Elston and I worked 6 lunch shifts and worked 7 night shifts a week.... We were young and in great shape and it was a blast.... it was a very hip trendy atmosphere... during some of Houston's most prolific Boom years.... and we were going to BOOM Town Central High School ... right near by ... Memorial High School.... Micheal Dell was one year behind me.

maybe your buddy can take me on as a chef / storyteller ;-)

John

ps ...interesting deal that within 10 or 15 years of graduating high school you pretty much know who is going to be the richest one out of anyone who went there......when you did..... at least money he made on his own no inheriting.... there are some families that have so much money in foundations, trusts and maybe even a couple of class A shares in the Federal Reserve.. .. that they don't even know how wealthy they are until they are 60 or so...
