Java is a serious threat to Microsoft's dominance for three reasons: technical superiority, massive support within the software development community, and massive support from vendors like IBM, Computer Associates and Oracle. It's the supply of software and hardware, the availability of skilled workers, and the astonishing array of collateral material (pulished material, training programs, consulting services) which will propel Java technologies. Killer apps will soon be complete and the most notable is Lotus' eSuite. This isn't a Lotus product, rather, it's a Sun, IBM, Taligent, Lotus product. It will finally open the door for the NC into the enterprise in a big way. The cost is $49, the server software along with development tools is $1500. This is not some lame attempt to grab market share, IBM will have the banks, auto-makers and other large-scale industries buying Java-based systems by the millions. That is the only hope for Corel but the solution is not to think that a failed acquisition (WP) suddenly makes you competent at developing similar product in an object-oriented, networked environment like Java. Corel's design development process is incompetent, that should come as no surprise to anyone. They need to bring in competent people and then start looking at their options.

Might I suggest Corel market a special new brand of goalie pads..."The Obfuscator". So large and opaque that the shooter can't see any net at all. Marketing slogan: "Corel...if you can't win, change the rules."
