We liberals don't want a large government or small government, we want a government that we feel is necessary to manifest a vibrant society. E.g. the New Deal pulled millions of abjectly poor people out of horrible poverty and mostly women. Millions of old people like me can now get hip replacements because of medicare rather than having to live a life being crippled.

I have many friends who have had hip replacements they could not have had without medicare.

My mom grew up in abject poverty and told me as a kid about the suffering during the great depression. It is true we liberals do not like to see abject poverty and people suffering and think we know how to make it better for people.

Every single western democracy has universal health care but us; and most people in those countries like it. countries like Denmark (considered the happiest people on earth) have high taxes and a huge healthy middle class with few rich or poor, free education and health care. It is a wonderful country and certainly not communist.

We liberals think that is a better model than say Texas which has the lowest high school graduation in the country and lowest number of people with health care and among the lowest wages.

You can disagree with us, but don't question our patriotism or commitment to helping our fellow man or woman. And most of our ideas come out of our understanding of social science.

All we liberals want to do is help those less fortunate than us. I have never used any welfare except once I took $84 in food stamps when I was broke. Once.

I took care of my mom for 20 years who qualified for welfare and food stamps and we never took either of them. I paid for her needs. But I could and many can't.
