Herb,

Actually I think putting someone on ignore is about as gracefully as one can, as you put it, give up.

When the monologue becomes just too tedious to listen to anymore and when it becomes evident that a person has no intention of listening to reasoned arguments what is the point of further discourse with said person and why subject oneself to yet more of the same song that has been played from the get go?

Live is too short to waste time and thought on such people.

Graceful or ungraceful Annie, depending on your viewpoint

...they may be confounded by the seeming inability to critically reweigh the facts in light of some reasonable and pretty convincing counter arguments. Also, there's that thing about your arguments being overly subjective and intractable.
Examples? Not being swayed doesn't equate to "overly subjective and intractable".
