One thing I've noticed since the recs became public is quite a few people who rarely posted, but obviously read the threads and recommended what they liked. Seems to me if you were one of those people, you may visit the site less often now.

I considered a week or so ago how you would quantitatively or qualitatively determine whether the change adds value to SI. And suggested the amount of recommendations would be a good indicator, yet it was rebuffed.

The only thing I can figure is the owners believe the quality of recommendations will rise by removing anonymity. I don't know one way or the other whether that is true. What I do know is news reports of NSA spying on chat rooms, emails, phone conversations and IRS targeted attacks, has increased the desire for anonymity online, and SI has shifted its features in the opposite direction.
