Thats a good question GF: First the norm for delineation drilling is usually 2" drill cores. Most were transportable with helicopters from
target to targets which Aber used successfuly. So initially one would
start drilling (Kimberlite search) with 2" cores. In the case of Abers
pipes the cores were drilled around 200Meters in depth. initially.,
the min-bulk was accomplished using 6" cores more than likely to
similiar depths but dont have that info in front of me to verify. The object and purpose was to identify the limits of the kimberlitic source
both geographically as well as structurally with the 2 cores. Notice
most Aber releases were "cut say 210meters of kimberlite., and the drill stopped in kimberlite." So Aber chose to delineate with 2 inch an
mini-bulk with 6 inch. After the intial mni-bulk., and further definition
drilling after the declines were dug., drill stations were installed for more drilling. As I recall. on 418 2 inch drills were set up to drill from
the 250 meter range down to 400 meters to again delineate the ore
from 250 on. As I recall they then secured larger bulk samples with
six inch cores from drill stations as well.
So all in all., I would say the deepest penetration on 418 initially was
in the 303 meter range using the small drills. Angular holes in target
definition will be somewhat shorter depending on the angle of the
drill., the purpose is to intersect 1 vertical with 2 angular to confirm
pipe configuration.
If Winspear proceeds in the manner Aber did., I would expect to see
those types of drill sizes used. No I didnt ask Sophie about the
depth of the ice., slipped my mind.
I believe the conversation about deeper drilling is connected more in
the search for Kimberlite and pipe delineation than anything else.
My read on the Min-bulk is restricted only to the ability of having the
permits and a snow road to transport equipment in.
George

Hi Goldfinger,

This info is now a little dated, but from the last time I spoke with Sophie (Nov. 28), here was the ice status...

1. 28" thick on the winter road at DiaMet's camp

2. 22" thick at Snap (it's a little further south)

Hope this helps,

Chris A.
