Jeez, Sal, if you're running a laptop you should probably just dial in/telnet in to the university system. Depending on what you need to do, of course, but a laptop is a pretty minimal size screen to run X on. I'm not familiar with Windows X implementations at all. Support under linux may prove difficult, I did a quick check at www.xfree86.org, which is I think the primary free software X place, and neomagic wasn't mentioned; you can check xfree86.org to see if it's listed there under another name. They don't support X for Windows, but mention xtreme.it (X Appeal) as a commercial product. NT is supposed to be problematic on a laptop too, right?

Or, you can always cash in a few shares & build another PC, $700 or so in parts for a 166MMX/TX chipset system, 32meg memory, 3-4gig disk. Sans monitor, but a cheezo 14" can be had for $150 or so, if you don't have any around to recycle, and it'd still look better that a laptop. Somewhat less portable, needless to say.

Good luck on this one, I just don't know much about laptops.

Cheers, Dan.

Sal, sorry I can't give you much input (I'm sure some of our thread techies will) but you may want to check out Caldera's Linux offerings, just a thought.

Good luck

Sal,

It being a laptop limits your options. Sounds like you have a screen res problem, a driver/linux problem, and possibly, a problem with your modem access being too slow for graphical X to be practical.

Could you describe the machine further:

1. screen res/max pixel depth/external monitor?
2. memory?
3. ethernet plug?
4. speed?
5. disk available
6. CD?

If you used x-client text only apps, you could use one of the x-client applications and not have to install unix on the laptop. Then you can just log in. After all, we once used text-unix over 9600 baud lines.

But the items listed above could change the recommendation.

Chaz

I want to get a unix environment going on my PC. What should I do?

Hummingbird (HUMCF) has a product called Exceed that allows you to run an X-Server on your Windows desktop. Thus, if you log on to a Unix box over a network or phone line, you can display X apps on your desktop.

Use it and love it.
