It was such a mess of vipers that I lost the plot part way through, not knowing who did what to whom.

What a strange way of life. It's as though there is no externality or teleological concept of the Cosmos, just an introspective Goedelian self-refverential hedonisitic appetite-driven life of greed.

Self-refverential = cool neologism.
